DİYARBAKIR - 81 year old sick prisoner Sıddık Güler, held in İskenderun Type T Prison is not released even though he is not able to meet his basic needs on his own.
The number of sick prisoners increases on a daily basis due to malnutrition and poor physical conditions in prisons. According to the data provided by the Human's Rights Association (İHD) there are more than 1.500 sick prisoners in prisons. It is stated that sick prisoners are at serious risk, especially since adequate hygiene and precautions have not been taken since the pandemic.
Sıddık Güler, an 81-year-old sick prisoner who has been in many different prisons for 26 years and is currently detained in Iskenderun T Type Prison, has hypertension and inflammatory joint rheumatism. Güler, who had two angio surgeries before and is now wheelchair- bound is not release despite all applications and efforts made for his release.
Stating that she spoke to her father on the phone on Monday, Güler's daughter Ayşe Güler said, “My father can not stay in prison due to his old age and illnesses. He caught Covid-19 in February and could not speak. He survived the virus now but has many illnesses. He lives in a wheelchair in prison and is taken to the hospital because of his illnesses. Being constantly sick and being taken to the hospital worsens his situation."
'WE ARE WORRIED'
Stating that they were worried about his father being sick and old, Güler stated that the sick prisoners in prisons should be released as soon as possible.
