ISTANBUL - Bawer Deniz, who lost his brother Turgay Deniz, who was seriously ill, in prison, condemned the burning of his brother Ulaş Deniz, who had tuberculosis, by saying, "I lost one of my older brothers and I don't want to lose the other."

 

While hundreds of seriously ill prisoners in prisons are faced with death, the circular "Proceedings on the Mitigation or Abolition of Sentences of Persons Due to Persistent Illness, Injury and Husband", signed by Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ, does not have the quality of a solution for political prisoners. While the situation of thousands of ill prisoners worsens in prison conditions, which pose serious risks, the circular that remains in the discourse does not go beyond increasing concerns.

 

Ulaş Deniz is one of the prisoners who contracted the disease due to prison conditions.

 

RELEASE OF PRISONER IS DELAYED DUE TO NOT BEING REGRET

 

Ulaş, who was detained in his house in Istanbul Sultanbeyli within the scope of the investigation carried out by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in 2011, was arrested by the Criminal Judgeship of Peace, to which he was transferred after a 3-day detention, and sent to Metris Prison. Accepting the indictment against him, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for "possession of explosives" in the trial at the Istanbul 22nd High Criminal Court. Deniz, who was transferred to prisons in Ankara and Tekirdağ respectively, is currently being held in Kandıra No. 1 F Type Closed Prison.

 

Deniz, who had Tuberculosis before, started to suffer from heart and eye diseases while his illness progressed due to prison conditions. Deniz, who was taken to the Administration Monitoring Board on March 28, did not accept the imposition of "regret", so his release was postponed for 6 months.

 

BROTHERHER TURGAY DENIZ

 

Turgay Deniz, who was not released despite his hospital report and living with a tube for 12 years due to tuberculosis, was taken to Yedikule Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital, without informing his family, due to his worsening condition. The prison administration, who called the family of Turgay Deniz, who was operated on, said that the decision to release Deniz was given and his treatment in the hospital continues. However, Deniz died on February 2, 2022.
