Allegation of torture on Deniz Poyraz: Knives should be tested for DNA

İZMİR - Lawyer Türkan Aslan stated that Deniz Poyraz, who was murdered in the attack against HDP, may have been tortured before she was killed and that she had traces of torture mostly seen in torture cases done by ISIS and demanded that the knives should be tested for DNA.

Onur Gencer, who murdered party employee Deniz Poyraz in the attack on the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) İzmir Provincial Organization on June 17, was arrested on the charge of "premeditated killing" even less than 24 hours after the incident. Gencer's rapid arrest and the fact that the trace of a bullet in one of the party rooms was not noticed during the crime scene investigation brought along criticism that the investigation was superficial.

SHELL CASINGS DISCOVERED

HDP and Poyraz's lawyers submitted a 10-page petition consisting of 38 articles to the prosecutor's office on June 21, demanding that the investigation be conducted effectively. The prosecutor's office, which took action after the news made by our agency that the crime scene investigation was incomplete, demanded that both the trace of the bullet to be found and an the scene to be examined for shell casings. As a result of the examination, it was learned that a shell casing was found.

Türkan Aslan, one of the lawyers of HDP Headquarters Law Commission, who closely follows the investigation, spoke about the deficiencies in the investigation and their application to the prosecutor's office.

THE BUILDING WAS NOT THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATED

Stating that the investigation of the crime scene in the building and the collection of evidence was done effectively. Attorney Aslan said: "The murder suspect says in his statement that he went up to all floors of the 8-storey building and knocked on the doors of the apartments on each floor.  In the meantime, it is certain that he is wandering between floors. The possibility of leaving a trace inside the building, the possibility of leaving evidence of crime is highly possible. But crime scene investigators did not examine the building. If an examination had been made on all floors, the evidence would have been collected more soundly." Stating that the fact that the shell casing was found days later indicates that a detailed investigation was not carried out, Aslan said: "The possibility that there were persons related to the suspect in the incident is a possibility that should not be overlooked. Again, there is the possibility of hiding the criminal evidence that he brought with him. It is also difficult to clarify these questions, as detailed examinations are not made in the common areas and other apartments of the building."

'SHE MIGHT BE TORTURED'

Stating that Poyraz was most likely tortured before she was killed, Aslan pointed out to 3 bullets fired into Poyraz's head and legs. Aslan said: "“During the crime scene investigation, the Forensic Specialist mentioned another wound on his head that was difficult to describe at the time. The examiner made this determination. We are of the opinion that the wound on the skull is not due to falling or hitting her head or the gun shot wound. In other words, we think that Deniz was tortured either when she was alive or after she was killed."

Aslan stated that forensic specialist doctors, who asked about the head injury, told them that the scar could be caused by a sharp object. Stating that this could be learned with the autopsy report, Aslan said: "Besides, there is damage in different parts of Poyraz's body. When it all comes together, we think that she was not just shot to death. For this reason we believe that Poyraz was tortured."

THE METHOD OF TORTURE USED BY ISIS

Stating that the knives found on the killer and his statements strengthens the claim of torture , Aslan demanded that the knives should be tested for DNA. Aslan said: "If the injury was caused by a sharp object, it would point to the method of ISIS or similar organizations. In this case, it turns out that the suspect was not only a medic in Manbij, but was there for another purpose and tried to use the experiences he gained there through Deniz."

NEW FINDINGS WILL BE SUBMITTED TO THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

Stating that they will submit a written petition to the prosecutor's office again today regarding the new findings they have determined, Aslan continued: “If an investigation is carried out within the framework of our requests, the people behind this perpetrators will also be found. In that sense, we expect the prosecutor to be very meticulous and conduct an effective investigation on the topics we requested immediately."
