NEWS CENTER – 572 schools have closed in Kobanê (Kobani) and the surrounding area due to the siege, leaving 72 thousand students and 4 thousand 190 tachers unable to receive an education.
Kobanê, one of the symbolic cities of Rojava, has been under siege for 22 days by HTS-ISIS and Turkish-backed paramilitary groups.
The wave of attacks has also hit education in the region. A total of 72,000 students in Kobanê and its surroundings (Eyn Isa, Sirrin, Çelebiyê, Qinê, Şêran and the villages and towns connected to them), which are part of the Euphrates Region, have been deprived of their right to education.
Primary, middle and high school students cannot attend school due to the attacks. The first term of the academic year ended on 15 January, and the second term was scheduled to begin on 25 January. However, all educational activities have been suspended due to ongoing attacks and the siege.
The 572 schools in Kobanê were completely evacuated and became shelters for thousands of displaced families. Approximately 17 schools in the city centre of Kobanê and its surrounding villages were filled with migrants from areas such as Raqqa, Tabqa and Ain Issa, as well as displaced families from Til El Semîn Camp and Girê Spî. The schools now serve as emergency shelters rather than classrooms.
