NEWS CENTER - Journalist Süleyman Ahmet was detained by units affiliated with the KDP, His lawyer Beşdar Hasan was able to meet after 211 days and said: "His situation was good, he wants the public pressure to continue."

It took 211 days to hear from Rojnews' Arabic editor Süleyman Ahmet, who was detained by units affiliated with the KDP at the Pêşxabûr (Sêmalka) Border Gate while returning from the Syrian city of Aleppo to the Federated Kurdistan Region on October 25, 2023. Ahmet's lawyers managed to meet with him in Duhok public order. Ahmet also had a 2-minute phone call with his family in Northern and Eastern Syria.

Beşdar Hasan, one of Süleyman Ahmet's lawyers, made a statement to Rojnews about the meeting. Hasan stated that today they had a meeting with the Duhok Investigation Court and the Duhok Public Security Directorate, with an appointment made by the President of the Human Rights Institution, Muna Yaqub, and the General Director of Human Relations of the Human Rights Institution, Süleyman Muhsin.

'HE WANTED THE PUBLIC PRESSURE TO CONTINUE'

Hasan, together with Rêvîng Yasin, Cameraman Sarmemî and Rêbaz Wisû, lawyers of Süleyman Ahmet Defense Group, said the following about the meeting they held with the relevant institutions: “Following these developments, we had a meeting with Süleyman Ahmet in a room. During the meeting, Süleyman Ahmet conveyed his special greetings to everyone who made an effort for him, especially Rojnews journalists. Süleyman Ahmet also expressed his gratitude to all organizations, journalists, unions and patriots who participated in the freedom campaign carried out for him. We were very happy to see that he is healthy. He stated that his only demand is to continue public pressure until he released.”
'NO EVIDENCE FOR THE ACCUSATION'

Hasan stated that Ahmet was accused of "endangering national security", which is Article 1 of Law No. 21 enacted by the Kurdistan Region Parliament in 2003, and that the prosecutor continued to hold him in prison for this reason. Hasan said: “However, not a single piece of evidence has been produced regarding this alleged crime for 7 months. We received the necessary power of attorney to become his attorney. Thereupon, we met with the Duhok Public Order Review Court. They stated that their doors are open to us."

'THE COURT DAY WILL BE THE DAY HE WILL BE RELEASED'

Finally, Hasan said: “We will continue our work to present the Süleyman Ahmet file to the court in a very short time. To put it plainly, the day Süleyman Ahmet will be brought to court will be the day he will be released. We want to give the good news that Süleyman Ahmet has been released as soon as possible. As he stated, not a single piece of evidence has been produced regarding the alleged crime. During the interrogation process, it was revealed that he went to Rojava officially and returned. It has also been officially documented that he has a residence permit in the Kurdistan Region."
