AMED – University student Kemal Kurkut, who was killed by the police in Amed during Newroz in 2017, was commemorated at the place where he was shot.
During the Newroz celebrations in Amed in 2017, university student Kemal Kurkut even though was naked, on the grounds that he was a suicide bomber was killed by the police at the checkpoint at the entrance of the area. Kurkut was commemorated at the point where he was shot.
Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Co-Chair Berdan Oztürk, Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Co-Chairs Keskin Bayındır and Ciğdem Kılıçgün Uçar, Kurd politician Leyla Zana and Mehmet Ocalan were also present at the commemoration.
At the commemoration, where Kurkut's photo was carried, carnations were left at the place where he was shot.
Speak at the commemoration DEM Party Co-Chair Tunce Bakırhan said: “In 2017, during Newroz celebrations, our friend Kemal was murdered here. We remember him with respect on Newroz 2024. We will not forget Kurkut. Even though those who murdered him tried to end with impunity like other cases, we will not forget. We will follow up on this. Kemal Kurkut is immortal. We celebrate Kemal Kurkut's Newroz. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our people on Newroz and state that we will follow the cause."
