DİYARBAKIR- Ill prisoner Halil Güneş, who was repeatedly asked to be released due to his illnesses, passed away.
Halil Güneş, who was detained in Diyarbakır No. 2 Type F Closed Prison, and was on the list of sick prisoners of the Human Rights Association (İHD), was not released despite all calls. Güneş lost his life this morning.
Güneş was arrested on January 2, 1993 when he was 23 years old and had been in prison for 29 years due to the aggravated life sentence given to him. Güneş, who has been struggling with lung and bone cancer for a long time, has been sent to 15 different prisons since his arrest. Güneş's illnesses emerged after the severe torture he was subjected to while in custody. The fractures that occurred in his ribs at first caused him to have difficulties in breathing by keeping his heart and lungs under pressure, and his discomfort increased over time due to the poor health conditions, nutrition and accommodation conditions in the prisons. He was later diagnoes with both lung and bone cancer. Güneş also suffered from severe COPD and sleep apnea and the doctors told that he had to sleep with a ventilator for the rest of his life and that he should wear an oxygen mask during the day.
FORENSIC MEDICINE INSTITUDE AND CONSTITUTIONAL COURT DECIDED AGAINST HIS RELEASE
Due to the high dosage of painkillers Güneş had to use, severe stress disorder, epilepsy, glaucoma in both eyes, hernias in the neck and stones in her kidneys developed. Although the Diyarbakır Training and Research Hospital gave a report saying "he cannot stay in prison" as a result of the lawyers' application, the Forensic Medicine Institute (FMI) prepared a new report on January 29, 2014, and concluded that Güneş could survive on his own and stay in prison, and his release was prevented. When it was determined that the cancer had progressed further in the examinations carried out in July 2014, his lawyers applied to the Constitutional Court (AYM) for his release and for the continuation of his treatment abroad, but no positive result could be obtained.
