Supreme Court objects to fine given to journalists in Berkin Elvan case

ISTANBUL - The Supreme Court of Appeals found the fines imposed on Eren Keskin and Reyhan Capan from Özgür Gündem newspaper to be low for the news about the murder of Berkin Elvan.
 
A law suit was filed against Executive Editor of Free Newspaper Eren Keskin and Co-Editor-in-Chief Reyhan Çapan regarding the report about Berkin Elvan (14) who was killed as a result of a gan cannister used by the police.
 
6 different reports about Berkin Elvan was considered to be crimes by the prosecutor's office which accused the newspaper of 'revealing the identity of those who are under 18 and harmed by a crime'. Keskin and Çapan was fined for 10 thousand 461 TL each.
 
SUPREME COURT SAYS THE FINE IS LOW FOR THE 'CRIME'
 
Keskin and Çapan's lawyers then appealed to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court found the fines given to Keskin and Çapan low. The Court of Cassation sent the file to the local court, demanding that Keskin and Çapan be fined for more.
 
The first hearing of the retrial will be held on November 18 at the Istanbul 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance.
