MARDIN - While university students are looking for a place to stay, the student dormitory, which has been turned into a quarantine center for soldiers and guards in Mardin, is still being used by law enforcement units hile students are sleeping in the parks.
While the housing problem of university students is waiting for a solution, the dormitory allocated to soldiers and guards in Mardin cannot be taken back from them. Despite the reactions, the dormitory used by the students who come from the villages of the Artuklu district and study at the Said Nursi Anatolian Imam Hatip High School Science and Social Sciences Project School is not evacuated. When the dormitory, which has been turned into a quarantine center, is not evacuated, students have to commute by shuttles. Provincial Directorate of National Education and Artuklu District Directorate of National Education does not take any steps despite all attempts.
‘PURPOSE IS TO PREPARE THE GROUND FOR COMMUNITIES’
Education and Science Workers' Union (Egitim Sen) Mardin Branch President Mustafa Bozan reminded that schools have been closed for nearly 2 years due to the pandemic, and said that it turned up that the authorities did not make any preparations during this time. Drawing attention to the housing problems of university students, Bozan said, "There are neither private dormitories or any other housing facilities for the students to stay here." Commenting that the accommodation problem of university and high school students is ignored, Bozan said that the parents are in a situation where they do not know what to do.
IT WILL AFFECT THE HEALTH OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Stating that the use of the dormitory belonging to the students as a quarantine center has a different dimension, Bozan said, “We knew that the dormitory was built for students, but it is being used in a way that does not fit its purpose. In addition, the use of this place as a quarantine zone is another problem. It can affect the health of an entire neighborhood. We have doubts as to whether the basic needs of the soldiers quarantined there are met there, and whether the waste from the facility is disposed appropriately."
THE APPROACH TO EDUCATION IS AN ISSUE
Adding that the government's approach to education emerged with the deprivation of the right to shelter of students who came from a distance, Bozan said: "The government, which should satisfy the needs of the students who will come to school after 2 years, and which needs to spend more energy than before, is taking away those basic rights today."
Stating that many schools were turned into police stations until 2017 in the Kızıltepe district, Bozan noted that a school building is still divided into two and given to the use of special operations police. Stating that the main purpose of it is not education, but security policies, Bozan said that this policy should be abandoned.
