ECHR verdict: Demirtaş must be released immediately 2018-11-20 13:35:11   NEWS DESK- ECHR decided that Selahattin Demirtaş should immediately be released because he is detained because of political reasons.    European Court of Human's Rights (ECHR) announced their decision on the application of previous Co-chair of People's Democratic Party Selahattin Demirtaş.   Attorneys of Demirtaş who is being detained in Edirne Prison for more than 2 years applied to ECHR in the name of Demirtaş on grounds of "Right to liberty and security", "the right to be released within a reasonable time or to be released during the trial period" and violation of the liberty of free election."   The court that considered his application decided that article 18 of European Convention on Human Rights which states "The limitations on rights and freedoms can only be applied for the purposes envisaged" is being violated.   ECHR ,that decided the imprisonment of Demirtaş is purely for political purposes, demanded that he must be released as soon as possible.   A Turkish judge voted against it.   According to the verdict, Turkey was sentenced to pay 10 thousand Euro immaterial compensation and a litigation expense of 15 thousand Euro.
