DEM Party’s Çetin Yıldız calls for participation in Kadıköy peace rally 2025-08-29 09:35:36 ISTANBUL – Çetin Yıldız, member of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party, announced ongoing preparations for the peace rally to be held on August 31 in Istanbul’s Kadıköy district under the slogan "Raise Your Voice for Peace for a Democratic Society," marking the upcoming World Peace Day. He invited everyone to join and express their belief in democracy.   This year, coinciding with the Peace and Democratic Society Process, various cities will host rallies, marches, and events for World Peace Day. In Istanbul, the day will be commemorated with a rally led by the Labor, Peace, and Democracy Forces at Kadıköy Rıhtım Square.    Yıldız highlighted the growing interest in this year’s event, especially in light of escalating wars in the Middle East, including Gaza and Syria, as well as Abdullah Öcalan’s February 27 peace call, which drew international attention. “Öcalan’s call set a model for peace worldwide. Following the PKK’s self-dissolution declaration, serious will and determination for peace have been demonstrated. The Kurdish people and their allies have shown strong support for this process,” he said.   'WE WILL SHOUT OUR DEMANDS IN THE SQUARES'   Yıldız noted ongoing efforts across many districts, emphasizing a widespread demand for peace and democratic society. He expressed confidence that people will voice their longing for peace and democracy in every public square on September 1. Istanbul’s Labor, Peace, and Democracy Forces have organized festivals, forums, and panels citywide in preparation. “On September 1, we will demand the strengthening of the peace process, the release of all political prisoners including Öcalan, and steps toward Turkey’s democratization,” he stated.   Expecting a large turnout, Yıldız stressed the urgent need for peace amid ongoing wars, exploitation, and destruction. He added: “Turkey urgently needs democratization. Everyone must actively participate in the process to discuss all problems and define equal citizenship on a democratic basis. A democratic society is the aspiration of the people, achievable through joint struggle. September 1 should be more than just a day of public gatherings—it is a starting point. We invite everyone to join us on August 31 to raise our voices for democracy and peace."   MA / Melik Çelik
