'Unprepared indictment of journalists is a violation of rights'

	ANKARA - HDP MP Remziye Tosun, who has brought to the agenda of the Parliament that no indictment has been prepared for 16 journalists arrested in Amed for 7 months, said that the situation in question is a violation of rights.

	 

	Turkey ranked 149th out of 180 countries in 2022 in the World Press Freedom Index. Around the country, nearly 90 journalists were arrested for carrying out professional activities. The number of investigations against journalists is unknown. According to the Dicle Fırat Journalists Association's (DFG) 2022 Report on Violations of Rights, 39 journalists were arrested in 2022 and 76 journalists were sentenced. In addition, 65 journalists were attacked. In the report in question, it was stated that law enforcement officers first targeted journalists who were engaged in professional activities in the field. Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Diyarbakır Remziye Tosun submitted a research proposal to the Presidency of the Assembly regarding the situation in question. In addition, he submitted a parliamentary question to be answered by the Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdag.

	 

	THE UNPREPARED INDICTMENT IS THE VIOLATION OF RIGHTS

	 

	In her research proposal, Remziye Tosun stated that the Ministry of Justice's failure to prepare an indictment against journalists arrested for their professional activities caused a violation of rights, and asked the following questions: Will there be any attempts by your Ministry to not prepare an indictment for 16 journalists arrested on June 8, 2022 for 7 months, and for 9 journalists arrested on October 25, 2022 for 3 months? How many investigations has your ministry initiated against public officials regarding the violations of rights that journalists are subjected to while being detained and subsequently arrested? If an investigation has not been opened regarding the violations of rights, what is the reason?”
