Court upholds non-punishment of police officer accused of killing Kurkut

	DİYARBAKIR - The Diyarbakır 7th High Criminal Court, following the decision of the Court of Appeal with the establishment of the decision of "no punishment for the police officer, Yakup Şenocak, who was on trial for the murder of Kemal Kurkut," has decided that there is no room for Şenocak to be punished.

	 

	After the Diyarbakır Regional Court of Justice overturned the acquittal of police officer Yakup Şenocak, who was  on trial for "deliberately killing" university student Kemal Kurkut during the 2017 Newroz celebrations in Diyarbakır, a decision of re-trial was made. After the Court of Appeal's decision that "the conditions for using a gun were met in Kurkut's murder" and that the acquittal decision given to Şenocak was lifted and a new decision was made that there was no room to punish Şenocak.

	 

	While the accused police officer and Kurkut's brother attended the hearing at the Diyarbakır 7th High Criminal Court via Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS), Kurkut family's lawyers Serdar Çelebi and Mehmet Emin Aktar and the defendant's lawyer Ahmet Fırat were present at the hearing.

	 

	Prosecution demanded that a decision of non-punishment was made in line with the decision of the Court of Appeals. Defendant police Yakup Şenocak refused the accusation and said: "Wrong man is on trial here. If the investigation was done properly, you would be prosecuting the right person."

	 

	DECISION OF NON-PUNISHMENT

	 

	Convinced that the legal conditions for using a gun were met, the court decided that there was no need to punish the accused police officer Yakup Şenocak.
